Paper Packing Peanuts or Bubble Wrap?
By Kim Hayashi - May 10th, 2010
Last week, Ed received a box of prototyped parts and I may have offended him by being more interested in the packing material than the painted finish of his SLA parts. I felt like the little kid who was more intrigued by the cardboard box than the toy it housed. But seriously, I think these paper packing peanuts are cool.
They start as a huge perforated sheet that is broken into individual pieces and folded once fed into a machine. Dove tail tabs at the ends are folded together to maintain their triangular structure. This simple method eliminates the need for an adhesive, making them completely recyclable. Nicely done ExpandOS.
As fascinating and environmentally correct as these paper packing peanuts may be, I’m not sure they can outweigh the joy of popping bubble wrap…
